Diplômé de la Royal Academy of Music de Londres, Nicolas Cavallier fait ses débuts au Festival de Glyndebourne en 1990 dans DIE ZAUBERFLOTE (Sarastro), mis en scène par Peter Sellars.
Sa tessiture de baryton-basse lui permet d’aborder un répertoire extrêmement hétérogène allant des grands rôles mozartiens et rossiniens (DON GIOVANNI, Figaro, Don Alfonso, Selim dans IL TURCO IN ITALIA à Bruxelles, Le Gouverneur dans LE CONTE ORY, Mustafà de L’ITALIANA IN ALGERI au Théâtre des Champs-Elysées) au répertoire français (Escamillo, Arkel, Don Quichotte, Méphisto, Nilakantha, Phanuèl dans HERODIADE, les Diables des CONTES D'HOFFMANN à Genève, Monte-Carlo, Seattle, Le Marquis de la Force dans DIALOGUES DES CARMELITES à Bruxelles, au TCE et à Bologne), à celui vériste et verdien (Scarpia, Philippe II, Zaccaria), avec des incursions dans l’opéra allemand (Die Hollandër, Orest dans ELEKTRA, le Roi dans LOHENGRIN).
Parallèlement il endosse, depuis 2008, le rôle de Don Quichotte/Cervantes dans L’HOMME DELA MANCHA, comédie musicale de Leigh/Wasserman, mis en scène par Jean-Louis Grinda et interprété naguère par Jacques Brel.
Sa carrière l’emmène également à la Scala de Milan, au Deutsch Oper de Berlin, à Bruxelles, Vienne, Seattle et New York en passant par les Opéras de Hong Kong et d'Oman, où il collabore avec des metteurs en scène tels qu’Olivier Py, Robert Carsen, Robert Wilson ou K.H. Hermann, sous la baguette de chefs d’orchestre tels que Michel Plasson, Armin et Philippe Jordan, Colin Davis, J.E. Gardiner ou Alberto Zedda.
Invité régulier de l’Opéra National de Paris, Nicolas Cavallier il y interprète, entre autres, Frère Laurent dans ROMEO ET JULIETTE de Berlioz en 2018, mis en scène par Sasha Waltz, avant d'incarner le Marquis de la Force (DIALOGUES DES CARMELITES) à La Monnaie de Bruxelles, au TCE, à Caen et au Comunale de Bologne.
Cette saison, nous pouvons le retrouver dans LES CONTES D'HOFFMANN ainsi que dans le rôle-titre du DEMON de Rubinstein à l’Opéra National de Bordeaux, SIGURD de Reyer à Nancy, en récital à Paris pour L'INSTANT LYRIQUE, dans les rôles-titres du CHATEAU DE BARBE-BLEUE de Bartok à Marseille et de DON QUICHOTTE à Tours, COSI' FAN TUTTE à l'Opéra du Rhin.
Dans le futur, FAUST à Limoges, EUGENE ONEGUIN (Gremin) à Toulouse, la création LES SOULIERS DE SATIN à l'Opéra de Paris.
Nicolas Cavallier à participé à de nombreux enregistrements audio et vidéo, entre autres LES NOCES dE FIGARO (rôle-titre) dans la version française d’Eric Emmanuel Schmitt, CARMEN sous la baguette de John Eliot Gardiner, LES CONTES d’HOFFMANN, mise en scène d’Olivier Py.

Nicolas Cavallier makes his singing studies in London at the Royal Academy of Music and at the National Opera Studio. His professional career begins at Glyndebourne Festival with DIE ZAUBERFLÔTE (Sarastro), directed by Peter Sellars, and FIDELIO (Don Fernando).
He regularly performs major Mozart’ roles such as Figaro (LE NOZZE DI FIGARO), Leporello, Don Giovanni and Don Alfonso (COSÌ FAN TUTTE) as well as the title roles of Massenet’s DON QUICHOTTE (Avignon, Seattle), IL TURCO IN ITALIA (Brussels, Geneva) or DER FLIEGENDE HOLLÄNDER.
Specialised in the "devil" roles of LES CONTES D'HOFFMANN, FAUST, LA DAMNATION DE FAUST or THE RAKE'S PROGRESS, he also sings, among others, the Governor (LE COMTE ORY) and Escamillo (CARMEN – John Eliot Gardiner-DVD recording) at Paris Opera Comique, Mustafa (L’ITALIANA IN ALGERI) in Paris TCE, Philippe II (DON CARLOS), Claudius (HAMLET) as well as Merlin (LE ROI ARTHUS) in Strasbourg, Arkel (PELLÈAS ET MÈLISANDE) at Venice Fenice, BÉATRICE ET BÉNÉDICT in Paris conducted by Sir Colin Davis, ATYS in Paris and New York, Raymond (LUCIE DE LAMMERMOOR) at Paris Châtelet and Lyon, Debussy’s LA CHUTE DE LA MAISON USHER at the Bregenzer Festival, THAÏS in Vienna, Orest (ELEKTRA) in Marseille conducted by Pinchas Steinberg, LA FAVORITE (Balthazar) in Monte-Carlo and Paris TCE, L’AMOUR DES TROIS ORANGES in Berlin, staged by Robert Carsen.

He is also asked to participate in the main role of Don Quichotte to a new production of L’HOMME DE LA MANCHA, successfully performed in France and in Monte-Carlo, following the footstep of Jacques Brel.
